Masonic Regalia Guide: What Do You Need?

A complete guide to Masonic regalia requirements for every degree and order — from joining the Craft through to Grand Rank. Includes regalia care and storage advice.

Choosing the right Masonic regalia marks an important step in every Freemason's journey. Whether you are preparing to join the Brotherhood, progressing through the degrees, or entering a new Masonic order, knowing exactly which items you need saves time, avoids unnecessary expense, and ensures you arrive at Lodge properly dressed.

This guide covers the regalia requirements for every major degree and order practised under the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) and its associated orders. We list what you must have, what your Lodge or Chapter typically provides, and what optional items — such as cufflinks, ties, and lapel pins — make welcome additions or gifts for a newly Raised Brother.

If you are unsure about anything, speak with your Lodge Secretary or Proposer. Provincial requirements can vary, and your Lodge will always guide you on local expectations.

Craft Regalia — The Three Degrees

Masonic Regalia Care & Storage Guide

Your regalia represents your journey through Freemasonry. Proper care protects your investment, preserves the symbols, and ensures every piece remains in presentable condition for years to come.

Aprons & Sashes

  • Store flat inside a breathable case or acid-free box — never fold tightly for extended periods
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat sources
  • Spot-clean minor marks with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soap
  • Never machine wash — use a specialist dry cleaner experienced with ceremonial textiles if deep cleaning is needed
  • Place acid-free tissue between layers to prevent colour transfer

Jewels, Breast Jewels & Metal Parts

  • Polish gently with a soft microfibre cloth after each meeting
  • Never use chemical cleaners, silver dip, or abrasive polishes — these can damage engraving, gilding, and enamel
  • Store jewels individually in soft pouches to prevent scratching
  • Keep metal away from damp environments to slow tarnishing

Gloves

  • Hand-wash white cotton gloves in cold water with mild detergent
  • Lay flat on a clean towel to dry — never tumble-dry or wring
  • Replace gloves when they begin to yellow or lose their shape
  • Keep a spare pair in your regalia case for emergencies

Mantles, Tunics & Caps (KT / KTP)

  • Hang mantles on padded hangers inside a breathable garment bag
  • Never store in plastic — trapped moisture causes mildew and discolouration
  • Brush caps gently with a soft clothes brush to remove dust
  • Use a professional dry cleaner for deep cleaning of tunics and mantles

Regalia Cases

  • Wipe hard cases with a damp cloth periodically
  • Ensure cases are fully dry before storing regalia inside
  • Replace cases that develop broken hinges, damaged locks, or torn interiors
  • A quality case is worth the investment — it protects everything inside

General Best Practice

  • Always wash hands before handling regalia
  • Remove your apron at the Festive Board to avoid food and drink spills
  • Inspect your regalia before each meeting — address small issues early
  • If regalia has been damaged or is beyond repair, many Provinces can advise on proper disposal

Frequently Asked Questions About Masonic Regalia

When you first join as a Candidate, you do not need any Masonic regalia. Your Lodge provides everything required for the three Craft ceremonies. You should wear a dark lounge suit, white shirt, black tie, dark shoes, and white cotton gloves. You will only need to purchase your own regalia — starting with a Master Mason's apron — after you have been Raised to the Third Degree.
Costs vary depending on the degree, quality, and level of embroidery. A basic Master Mason's apron typically starts from around £25–£45. Provincial and Grand Rank regalia sets, which include hand-embroidered aprons and collars, can range from £150 to over £500 depending on the specification. Knights Templar regalia (mantle, tunic, cap, sword, etc.) represents a larger investment due to the number of items required. Always speak with experienced Brethren in your Lodge to understand what you truly need before purchasing.
Yes. Many Brethren purchase second-hand regalia, particularly for the Craft degrees. Lodges sometimes maintain a regalia pool or charity fund that loans items. The key requirements are that the regalia is clean, in good condition, and appropriate for your degree. Provincial regalia bearing a specific Province badge must match your own Province. Second-hand jewels, aprons, and collars in good condition are perfectly acceptable in Lodge.
Full dress regalia features hand-embroidered designs and richer ornamentation. It is typically worn at Provincial or Grand Lodge meetings, installations, and other formal occasions. Undress regalia uses printed or machine-woven designs and serves as a more practical option for regular Lodge meetings. At Provincial level, many Brethren own both, though full dress may be worn at all meetings if preferred.
Store your apron flat inside a breathable regalia case or acid-free box. Avoid folding it tightly, as this creates permanent creases in the fabric and damages embroidery. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Place acid-free tissue paper between the apron and any metal jewels to prevent tarnish marks on the fabric. Never store regalia in sealed plastic bags — trapped moisture causes mildew and discolouration.
The most practical gifts for a newly Raised Master Mason include a quality regalia case, a ritual book, or a pair of personalised Masonic cufflinks. For milestones such as becoming Worshipful Master or receiving Provincial honours, an engraved presentation jewel, a personalised Masonic mug, or a monogrammed tie all make lasting mementos. Consider the recipient's degree and order when choosing — the most thoughtful gifts reflect their specific Masonic journey.
Yes. Each Masonic order and degree has its own distinct regalia. Your Craft apron cannot be worn in a Royal Arch Chapter, and your Mark regalia differs from your RAM regalia. This means your regalia collection grows as you progress through additional orders. A good regalia case with multiple compartments helps keep everything organised. Some items — such as dark suits and white gloves — serve across all orders.
We strongly advise against using silver polish, chemical dips, or abrasive cleaning products on Masonic jewels. These products can damage engraving, strip gilding, and discolour enamel work. The safest approach: gently polish your jewels with a soft microfibre cloth after each meeting. For heavily tarnished items, seek a specialist who handles ceremonial metalwork.
